Uruguay’s Capó Ortega Ties French Top 14 Appearance Record

History was made today in France. Playing for Castres against Clermont Uruguay’s Rodrigo Capó Ortega tied the official Top 14 appearance record. In his 342nd Top 14 match he equalled the record held by Thibault Privat.

The performance from Castres was not the best today. Clermont hammered the reigning French champions, winning 41-6 at home.

Next up for Capó Ortega and Castres is a home match on Saturday November 03. In a south-west battle Castres play host to Pau. Game time for Capó Ortega will see the Uruguayan officially becoming the player with the most appearances in Top 14 history.

Of note is that all of Capó Ortega’s 34s appearances have been for Castres. His longevity at the club is well documented and he is now set to surpass the 400 appearance mark for the club. Combining Top 14 with European appearances will see the Montevideo second-rower reaching 400 this season.

A veteran of RWC 2003 in Australia, Capó Ortega is expected to set a further record in 2019. His likely involvement for Uruguay in Japan 2019 will see him playing in a second World Cup and doing so sixteen years after his first.
