Canadian prop Liam Murray heads to MLR Combine

Canadian prop Liam Murray will take part in the World Rugby combine at Glendale, Colorado, this week. The 21-year-old joins players from Uruguay, Brazil, and Chile as part of a joint effort with Major League Rugby. Professional contracts will be on offer following an intensive week of training and a trial match against the Raptors at Infinity Park on Saturday.

Hailing from Langley in the Greater Vancouver area, Murray is a graduate of the Canada u20 program and was quickly promoted to the Canada ‘A’ side for the Americas Pacific Challenge in 2017. He previously spent time overseas with both Scarborough RUFC in England and Counties Manukau in New Zealand. Most recently he has been playing for James Bay in the CDI Premier League.

Murray is primarily a loosehead prop though he suited up at tighthead for the BC Bears in this year’s Canadian Rugby Championship. He joins Uruguay’s Mateo Sanguinetti and Brazilian duo Lucas Abud and Wilton Rebolo as the props on display at the combine.

UBC Thunderbirds flyhalf Adam McQueen was due to join Murray in Glendale but was forced to withdraw after suffering a hamstring injury while playing against the UBCOB Ravens last weekend. A number of top Canadian players were not made available due to national training commitments ahead of next month’s World Cup Qualifiers.
