Canada ready to start new HSBC Sevens season

John Tait has named an experienced Canada side to take part in the Glendale Sevens this weekend, the first stop on the 2018-19 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series. This season doubles as an Olympic qualifier. The top four teams at the end of the season will qualify directly for Tokyo 2020. Canada closed the 2017-18 season in 4th place, the first time since the series began in 2012 that they fell out of the top three.

All but two of the 13 players traveling to Infinity Park were also participants in the July’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, where Canada slumped to a disappointing 7th-place finish. Emma Chown and Kaili Lukan join the squad for Glendale, though both have previous appearances on the HSBC circuit.

Canada have been drawn in Pool C along with Fiji, Ireland, and France. They will have the honor of playing in the first match of the new season, a 12:30 ET kickoff against Fiji. All matches will be streamed live on the CBC Sports website.
