Peru shut out Guatemala to win South American ‘B’ title

Peru defeated their hosts Guatemala 34-0 in Antigua on Saturday to clinch the 2018 Sudamérica 4 Naciones B competition. They had earlier in the week defeated Costa Rica 36-14. The competition was marred by the absence of Venezuela who were forced to drop out after their visas were denied, leaving only three teams instead of the intended four.

A close first half ended with the visitors up on 8-0 from one try and a penalty goal. Their strength and superior fitness was evident in the second half as Peru scored a further 26 unanswered points. Four tries, three converted, did the damage and sealed the historic victory.

The Guatemalans were shut out on the day but finish as runners-up after recording an 18-12 win over Costa Rica in the tournament opener.
