Canada fall to Uruguay in Montevideo

For the third time in 2018 Canada have been defeated by Uruguay. This time it was the ‘A’ sides of each team, with the hosts earning a 35-21 victory at the Americas Pacific Challenge. A dominant scrum powered the South Americans with Federico Favaro landing five successful kicks at goal.

A slow first half saw Favaro knock over two penalty goals before any tries were scored. Immediately following the second Doug Fraser broke through and had just enough momentum in the tackle to bounce over the line. Uruguay would not allow Canada to take the lead through to the half however, with the scrum earning a penalty try after repeat infringements.

Canada’s maul worked well and early in the second half they sucked in the defense to allow Patrick Parfrey the space to squeeze into the corner. Guiseppe du Toit’s conversion was spot on from a tough angle and gave the Canadians a one-point lead.

Favaro took the lead back with his third penalty goal and then Uruguay stretched the gap to nine. Manuel Diana made good progress and electric scrumhalf Santiago Arata skipped away from the breakdown to race clear under the sticks.

There was a glimmer of hope when Gordon McRorie scored a brilliant solo effort with his own sniping run and step inside Favaro. Uruguay would not allow the comeback to be completed.

An attack was halted just short but Diana was on hand to reach over and then Leandro Leivas made the corner with Arata sucking in the defense. Canada will play the Argentina XV on Wednesday with Uruguay facing the USA Select XV.
