NOLA sign South African center Tristan Blewett

The New Orleans Gold have signed South African provincial player Tristan Blewett for the 2019 Major League Rugby season. Originally from Johannesburg, the 22-year-old developed in the Sharks age-grade program and appeared in six Currie Cup matches in 2017. He joined the Kings earlier this month and started against the Griffons last weekend but will now take his chances in the new American competition.

A versatile outside back, Blewett prefers the No13 shirt but has seen his chances limited in a country where midfielders the size of loose forwards are the norm. With good footwork, acceleration, and upper body strength he should fit well into the Gold’s high-octane attacking game.

This past season proved difficult for NOLA who suffered an abnormal amount of injuries to key players. Star loose forward Vince Jobo was a season-long casualty who will find a familiar accent in Blewett. More Southern Hemisphere signings are set to be announced by the Gold in the coming week.
