Chileans Linked to Major League Rugby

A groundbreaking week for South America saw Uruguayan players linked to moves to Major League Rugby (MLR). Texas clubs Austin Elite and Houston SaberCats are set to be the homes of Andrés Vilaseca and Santiago Arata.

The pair were two of three Teros who were initially linked to moves to the USA. The third is second-rower Ignacio Dotti who Americas Rugby News can confirm is close to being confirmed for the 2019 MLR season.

More are to follow with around 15 Uruguayan players expected to play in MLR next season. For Uruguay’s players the opportunity is ideal as they prepare for RWC 2019.

In addition to the three names of Arata, Dotti, and Vilaseca there is to be involvement of players in October’s MLR draft in Glendale, Colorado. On October 21-28 additional Uruguayan players are to be joined by players from South American rivals Brazil and Chile.

Of these players two Chileans have been linked to Major League Rugby – Ignacio Silva (flanker), and Marcelo Torrealba (scrum-half).  Their prospective involvement in MLR would add to Chile’s presence. This past season Nikola Bursic and Sebastián Kalm played for New Orleans.
