The first Uruguayan signing for Major League Rugby is now official. Austin Elite have announced the signing of Andrés Vilaseca for the 2019 season. The 27-year-old joins from the Old Boys club in Montevideo. He is expected to be followed by several other of his countrymen in the coming weeks.
Vilaseca has established himself as first choice inside center for Los Teros since making his test debut in 2013. He was part of the 2015 World Cup squad and played in the team that defeated Canada earlier this year to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2019.
A dynamic runner and skilled footballer, Vilaseca regularly acts as a left-foot option on clearing kicks and penalties for Uruguay. He has not kicked for points in test rugby but has done so for his club. Vilaseca will play in the upcoming Americas Pacific Challenge before joining his new team in Texas.
