Robbie Povey’s move to Coventry is now official. Having joined the club in recent weeks the Canadian international was confirmed as a new signing by the Greene King IPA Championship club on Tuesday.
Povey has yet to play a league match for Coventry but made his second appearance on loan with the Leicester Development side in the Premiership Shield competition on Monday. Despite winning all his caps as a flyhalf, he has been signed by Coventry primarily as a fullback.
Born in England, Povey won his fourth and most recent test cap in March against the US Eagles during the Americas Rugby Championship. More recently he was part of the Canada Selects tour to France. Povey qualifies for Canada via his mother who is a native of Montreal.
The 22-year-old previously played for Bedford Athletic and was part of the Northampton Saints Academy before spending time in Canada with Castaway Wanderers. He also represented the Prairie Wolf Pack in the Canadian Rugby Championship.
Povey’s signing makes it eight Canadians in the English second division. The others are Brett Beukeboom and Matt Evans (Cornish Pirates), Ciaran Hearn (London Irish), Jake Ilnicki and Dan Moor (Yorkshire Carnegie), Shane O’Leary (Nottingham), and Justin Blanchet (Bedford Blues).
