The University of Victoria will host the second edition of the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship. Two fields will be used for the competition that begins on November 21. Wallace Field and Centennial Stadium will feature games between regional qualifiers from across the country.
Men’s Rugby does not currently enjoy the same USports status as Women’s Rugby, leaving many university sides across the country to compete as club teams. It is hoped that the independently organized competition is one day elevated to the USports curriculum, with university rugby seen as a potentially significant breeding ground for future men’s international players in the same way it currently acts for the National Senior Women’s Team.
The inaugural tournament in 2017 was hosted by Guelph and won by the UBC Thunderbirds, who defeated their BC rival UVic Vikes in the final. Other competing teams were the Concordia Stingers, McMaster Marauders, UPEI Panthers, and the hosting Guelph Gryphons.
