England name US-born speedster in Sevens Squad

England coach Simon Amor has named a 20-strong training group for the 2018-19 HSBC Sevens Series. Included is 17-year-old Femi Sofolarin, a track and field sprinter from Dulwich College who is currently eligible for the US Eagles having been born in Boston.

In fact Sofolarin is also eligible for Scotland. He played for their u18 side against England earlier this year. Raised in greater London, however, it appears his international future will be with England though he won’t be tied until appearing on the senior Sevens circuit after his 18th birthday in January.

The youngster’s pace caught the eye of selectors not least while playing for Harlequins in the England u18 club finals earlier this year. He has also represented Great Britain at the u18 Rugby Europe Sevens Championship. While running track he had a personal best of 11.26 in the 100m in June 2017 before switching his focus to rugby.

The 2018-19 season doubles as an Olympic qualifier. Among the high profile players in the squad are Great Britain captain Tom Mitchell and circuit regulars Dan Bibby, Phil Burgess, Ollie Lindsay-Hague, and Dan Norton. James Rodwell and Charlie Hayter will assume player-coach roles with the side this year.
