Colombia too good for Mexico

Colombia were too good for Mexico today, winning 45-0 in Medellín. Los Tucanes’ victory made it back-to-back victories in the Americas Rugby Challenge and means Mexico remain winless in the competition.

Mexico was kept scoreless today and heated by 45 points. This was despite Colombia having been 11-0 ahead at the game’s midway point.

Scoring in the opening half was hard to come by. It did, however, begin quickly. Continuing off from his strong performance against Guyana was José Manuel Diosa. He landed a 4th minute penalty to give Colombia a 3-0 lead.

Eleven minutes later saw the opening try. Scoring was Diego Posada, making it 8-0 as Diosa’s attempted conversion sailed wide.

Posada’s try would be the only try of the opening half. With Mexico defending well Colombia went for goal with Diosa landing penalties in the 31st minute to close the scoring for the half.

In a mirror image of the opening half Diosa landed a 4th minute penalty of the half. Then in the 51st minute he would convert a try, this time scored by Neider García.

At this point Colombia were 21-0 ahead and well and truly in control. Los Tucanes would continue pressing, though, and be rewarded. Tries came in the 57th, 67th and 72nd minutes with Juan Dávila, Alejo Vanegas, José Manuel Diosa, and captain Sebastián Mejía all scoring. With it Colombia completed a 45-0 victory.

Both Colombia and Mexico are to play again on Saturday. In the third, and final, match day of the Americas Rugby Challenge Colombia take on Paraguay in the final while Mexico face Guyana with the winner finishing third.
