Round two of the 2018 Rugby Championship saw Argentina returning to winning ways. Having lost all four prior matches this year, Los Pumas completed a 32-19 win over South Africa to claim their third ever victory against the two-time RWC champions.
The match was the second of two test matches between the countries this year. The first fixture was played seven days prior in Durban with South Africa coming out comfortable winners.
Minor adjustments took place from both sides with one one change to both teams’ starting line-ups. Change, nonetheless, was clear and obvious in the approach. Argentina’s play in Mendoza was effective at countering where South Africa had the better of them in Durban.
Los Pumas ‘ win in Mendoza was very much on the back of a tremendous opening half. A try to Nicolás Sánchez and a doubleto Bautista Delguy saw Argentina holding a dominant 20 point half time lead.
South Africa would win the second half two tries to one but Argentina was up four tries to one after 50 minutes.
