Paul Mullen has become the latest US Eagles rep to find a home in Europe. The tighthead prop has signed a short-term contract with the Newcastle Falcons that will keep him in the English Premiership until at least December. He follows fellow Eagles front rowers Titi Lamositele and Joe Taufete’e to the Premiership, along with Sale flyhalf AJ MacGinty and new Harlequins signing Paul Lasike.
It’s been a breakthrough year for Mullen. The 26-year-old burst into international contention after playing with the Houston SaberCats for the inaugural Major League Rugby season. Born in Ireland, he had previously represented the USA at u20 level and was immediately called into the Eagles squad by head coach Gary Gold upon his signing with Houston.
Mullen made his test debut against Russia and went on to start all three of the USA’s June tests, including the historic win over Scotland. His involvement in the 2019 MLR season is now dependent on his form with Newcastle, who currently have former England regular David Wilson and England Saxons rep Scott Wilson as tighthead options as well as Scottish international Jon Welsh.
