Historic win over Stormers sees Jaguares closing in on Play-off’s

An historic 25-14 win over the Stormers today sees Los Jaguares closing in on the play-off’s. In their third season of Super Rugby the Argentine franchise is now one win away from securing a place in the final eight.

Against the Stormers in Buenos Aires, Los Jaguares played their final regular season match at home for the year. Los Jaguares now have a trip to South Africa and remaining matches against the Bulls in Pretoria and the Sharks in Pretoria. One will will confirm the team’s place in the play-off’s.

Against the Stormers Los Jaguares removed any doubt of the level of play following the shambolic three home test matches against Wales and Scotland earlier this month. Their win over the Stormers was their seventh consecutive win, underlining the winning culture of the Mario Ledesma regime.

In the opening half Los Jaguares were well on top in the first twenty minutes. They turned their superior play into points with Bautista Delguy and Guido Petti both scoring. Delguy’s try came from a scrum with him beating five defenders while Petti showed the speed of a winger to sprint in for try number two.

The Stormers hit-back in the game’s second quarter. Enjoying the better of play the South Africans scored through no 8 Sikhumbuzo Notshe who caught out two defenders in a lapse to go over.

Early on in the second half Los Jaguares scored their third, and final try. It came from a 60 meter burst from Petti. The second-rower again showed explosive pace to burst upfield. Ultimately covering defense would see him tackled. But with quick ball and unmarked players Matías Orlando went over in the right corner.

The Stormers also scored a second half try of their own. Classy fullback Dillyn Leyds darted over but it was largely a consolation try as Los Jaguares had the result secured. A late penalty from Nicolás Sánchez, his second for the match, saw that Los Jaguares were 11 points clear and would win comfortably.

With the win Los Jaguares have 38 competition points. They are 7th overall and 2nd in the African conference. The Lions lead the African conference and are 2nd overall with 41 competition points.
