In their second of three home June Internationals Canada took-on Russia on Saturday. Played in the capital of Ottawa, the North Americans went into the game as favorites but were not up to the task. An impressive Russia ran out comprehensive 43-20 winners.
Canada’s team move east to Halifax to take on the USA this coming weekend. The Eagles are flying high after home wins against Russia and Scotland. Against the same countries, Canada lost on both occasions.
The USA, Russia and Scotland have all qualified for RWC 2019. The June Internationals serve Canada as preparation for the November repechage tournament in France. The winner of the four team tournament will book the 20th, and final, place in RWC 2019.
Canada has appeared in all RWCs thus far. RWC 2019 will mark the first tournament in history without Romania meaning leaving Japan as, presently, the only Tier 2 country to play in all RWCs. The pressure is on Canada to qualify.
Based on their performance against Russia there is plenty of work to do. The side that will play in France this November is likely to be highly changed with Canada fielding their strongest line-up, unlike what was the case on Saturday in Ottawa.
