Scotland call for reinforcements

Scotland have been forced to call up two players after suffering injuries in their Americas tour opener against Canada on Saturday. Joining the squad is Edinburgh winger Dougie Fife and uncapped Currie scrumhalf Charlie Shiel. The duo replace Lee Jones and Ali Price, who have returned home with knee and groin injuries respectively.

It’s been three years since Fife, 27, won the last of his six test caps. After falling out of favor with Edinburgh he joined the Scottish Sevens side on the HSBC World Series to regain form and confidence. New Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill pulled him back into the club’s ranks in September and he has now earned a recall to the senior international side.

The 20-year-old Shiel is the son of former Scotland international Graham Shiel. He has graduated up through the age-grade ranks and after impressing with the Scotland u20s he recently signed with a two-year deal with Edinburgh ahead of the 2018-19 Guinness Pro Championship season. This is his first inclusion in a senior Scottish side.

Houston will host the Scots this week as they play against the Eagles on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium. Their tour will finish a week later in Argentina with a test against the Pumas in Resistencia.
