Canada and USA to meet in Paris Quarter Finals

Canada will meet the USA in the Cup Quarter Finals of the Paris 7s after the two North American sides came through the pool stages with two wins apiece. With the two sides level on 44 points apiece heading into the tournament, the winner won’t just earn bragging rights and a spot in the Semi Final – they will also secure the 4th overall finish on the 2017-18 season.

After a comfortable win over Russia that saw captain Ghislaine Landry leading the way with a pair of tries, Canada faced a tougher battle against Fiji but again came through in convincing fashion. Bianca Farella grabbed a double to set up a pool decider against tournament favorites Australia. The Olympic Champions proved too strong, running away 31-14 winners.

In Pool C the Women’s Eagles were fastest out of the gate with two tries from Ryan Carlyle contributing to a 24-7 lead only for Japan to score twice to keep it close. Spain proved a step up in competition and it took a late try from captain Nicole Heavirland to earn the win. Hosts France got the edge in their last match of the day, Lauren Doyle’s try in the opening minute unfortunately the only score of the game for the USA.

New Zealand, Australia, and France emerged undefeated on Day One and it will be New Zealand who awaits the winner of Canada and the USA. Australia are currently four points ahead of New Zealand for top spot on the table in the final round of the 2017-18 campaign.
