Canada beats USA, will play for Bronze in Paris

Canada defeated the USA in a thrilling Cup Quarter Final on Day Two of the Paris 7s but couldn’t get past New Zealand in the Semi Finals. The win over the Eagles secures 4th place overall on the 2017-18 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series, the first time they will finish outside of the top three since the start of the Women’s Series in 2012.

The back-and-forth contest between the two North American sides saw Kristen Thomas score to bring the scores level at 19-apiece but Bianca Farella broke free with a decisive score two minutes later. With time expired Naya Tapper grabbed her second try of the contest but Alev Kelter’s conversion drifted wide to hand the win to Canada.

The USA then took on Spain in the 5th Place Semi Finals and came away comfortable winners by 33-5. Lauren Doyle scored two tries with newcomer Ilona Maher touching down for the first time in her international career.

Day Three will feature only four matches in the women’s bracket, with the USA taking on Fiji in the 5th Place Final. Canada will play for Bronze against hosts France. The Cup Final features New Zealand and Australia with the latter clinching the overall 2017-18 Series title by reaching the final contest.
