Ruben de Haas signs senior Cheetahs deal

US Eagles scrumhalf Ruben de Haas has signed a senior contract with South African province Free State. The 19-year-old has been with the Cheetahs Academy program since 2017 and is now committed to the senior squad until at least October 2020.

Born in South Africa, de Haas moved with his family to Arkansas in 2009 and represented the Junior All-Americans before earning his first test cap as a replacement against Chile in the 2018 Americas Rugby Championship. He won further caps against Brazil and Uruguay, and is yet to win his first test start.

After leaving Super Rugby this season the Cheetahs now field senior sides in two domestic competitions – the Rugby Challenge and Currie Cup – as well as the Guinness Pro Championship. Contracted to the province, de Haas will be eligible to play for any of those teams.
