Agen have signed Colombian Andrés Zafra. The international second-rower joins the Top 14 club from rivals Lyon, for whom he played in the Espoirs with occasional matches coming for the senior side.
Aged 22, the arrival of Zafra at Agen continues the development of Colombia’s first player to have played in France. He was first spotted as a teenager playing in his home country. Among those to have seen him play was former French international Cédric Desbrosse.
The result was a move to France at the age of 19. He initially trained with Givors in France’s 5th division, the Fédérale 3 in January 2016. His talent was quickly noted and he moved to play for neighboring club Lyon, a Top 14 side.
Zafra is from Los Carboneros club in Cúcuta. He weighs 115kg and stands at 1.97 meters tall. In addition to being a talented athlete he is also studying mechanical engineering.
Both Lyon and Agen will play in the 2018-2019 Top 14 competition. Lyon made history int he 20172-108 season by reaching the Semi Finals for the first time. Agen was threatened with relegation before turning around their season and finishing well clear of the relegation zone.
Colombia recently competed in the inaugural Sudamericano 6 Naciones A, while in August and September Medellín will face Guyana, Mexico and Paraguay in the Americas Rugby Challenge. The competition is the ‘A’ version of the Americas Rugby Championship. Zafra may feature for Los Tucanes.
