David Tameilau to Glasgow on a Two-Year Contract

Subject of visa a medical David Tameilau joins the Glasgow Warriors on a two-year contract, the club has confirmed.

The move means the 28-year-old will link up with the Pro 14 side in July and remain at the Scottish club until May 2020. This will see him well positioned to play for the USA in RWC 2019 in Japan.

The Californian goes from being one Warrior to another. His move sees him joining the Glasgow Warriors from the Utah Warriors. He joined the Major League Rugby side from Narbonne in France’s Pro D2. Prior rugby saw him playing for the San Francisco in the defunct Pro Rugby.

Tameilau has 9 caps for the USA Eagles and is expected to go up against some of his future Glasgow Warriors teammates in the June Internationals. The USA play host to Scotland in Houston, Texas on Saturday June 16.

A versatile forward, Tameilau has featured at second-row, flanker and no 8. His five test starts have all been at the back of the scrum though he has featured in the other two positions in Eagles colors. Like Samu Manoa, Tameilau is a player capable of moving around.

The Glasgow Warriors is already the home of Greg Peterson, a USA Eagle with 14 caps. Also at the club is Canadian flier DTH van der Merwe and Tennessee’s Scotland international Tommy Seymour.

Tameilau noted that Peterson being a Glasgow Warrior influenced his move:

“I’m really good friends with Greg Peterson and he told me a lot of great things about the team and the environment and what they’re trying to accomplish. I heard nothing but good things from Greg about the club. It was great playing in France. It was tough rugby, but a good learning experience for me. I took a lot from being there and I’ve grown as a player as well. Playing in France has helped prepare me for going to Glasgow and I’m a better player for that experience.”
