Chile ended their 2018 Sudamericano 6 Naciones ‘A’ campaign with a 97-0 thrashing of Paraguay in Santiago on Saturday evening. Los Cóndores scored 15 tries in all as the Yakarés simply could not keep up with the pace of the high-flying Chilean attack.
By halftime the score was already past the half-century. Santiago Videla sealed a hat-trick before the first quarter was up and José Ignacio Larenas had a double. The powerful running and offloading of Vicente Ayarza in the midfield proved a significant problem for Paraguay as he scored one himself and created several others for his teammates.
Tomás Ianiszewski and Alfonso Escobar scored their second tries of the game in the second half with Lucca Avelli making it five multi-try scorers. Salvador Lues recorded his first test try with Ítalo Zunino and Domingo Saavedra also contributing touchdowns. Ianiszewski would finish the game on 32 points including 11 conversions.
Paraguay came close to scoring on a couple occasions but the Chilean defense was up to the task. The same could not be said of the Yakarés line which leaked line breaks to the Cóndores almost at will and never looked settled from the opening minute to the final whistle.
Los Cóndores must wait for the final result of Sunday’s match between the Argentina XV and the Uruguay XV to learn their final standing with third place overall most likely. Paraguay’s win over Colombia last weekend keeps the Yakarés out of the basement but on Saturday’s evidence they remain convincingly behind the next tier of competition.
