Americas Rankings – May 20 2018

International competition involving senior side’s has closed for the weekend. In total there were four test matches, two in South America and two in the Caribbean. The Americas Rankings – May 20 2018 have been updated to take into account the points exchanged.

Brazil hammered Colombia 67-5 in the opening match of the weekend. In doing so Os Tupis were crowned champions of the inaugural Sudamericano 6 Naciones A. The title was on the back of earlier wins over the Argentina XV and Chile. Despite the notable margin Saturday’s win over Los Tucanes sees no change to either Brazil or Colombia.

In Santiago Chile came close to securing their biggest win in history. Their 97-0 triumph over Paraguay was just five short of their 2003 victory against the same opposition. It results in Chile rising from 54.04 to 54.37 points. This sees no change in the Americas Rankings but does mean Chile rises above Kenya to be 29th in the world. Paraguay fall from 49.22 to 48.89 points, dropping below Morocco.

Trinidad & Tobago hosted and defeated Bermuda 27-24 in a nail-bitter in the Port of Spain. The result sees no change for either Caribbean nation in the rankings. They retain the same points and positions they had prior to the match.

Also in the Caribbean St Lucia played host to St Vincent & the Grenadines. The men in green won 17-14 on the road to overtake Peru in the Americas Rankings. St Vincent & the Grenadines went into the match on 34.91 points and St Lucia on 31.79. The updated rankings see the former rising to 35.90 and the latter falling to 30.80 points, to now hold a very narrow advantage over the Dominican Republic.

Also playing this weekend are the Argentina XV and the Uruguay XV. Their fixture did not see the test sides involved. For this reason no Americas Rankings points can be exchanged.

There are to be no international matches next weekend. As such the Americas Rankings will not up updated next Sunday. International competition will resume with the June Internationals on June 09. Five matches will be played in all with Argentina, Canada, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic and the USA at home against and Wales, Scotland, Bermuda, Guadeloupe, and Russia respectively.

Costa Rica continues to be ranked on 32.16 points. This is the case despite the country having gained World Rugby membership in November 2017. Upon gaining World Rugby membership unions enter the World Rankings and do so with a 30.00 ranking.
