St Vincent & the Grenadines Defeat St Lucia

St Vincent & the Grenadines defeated St Lucia today. The match was the first time the test sides of the respective countries have played in 2018 and saw the visitors winning 17-14.

Played at La Clery Playing Field in Castries, St Lucia the home side was beaten by a narrow margin. This mirrored today’s other test match in the Caribbean, a fixture won by three points by Trinidad & Tobago over Bermuda at the Port of Spain.

St Vincent & the Grenadines’ win will see the nation gaining points in the Americas Rankings. The rankings are updated every Sunday by Americas Rugby News.

Both St Vincent & the Grenadines and St Lucia are not involved in the 2018 Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championship. The competition was restructured for this year’s edition with it containing three divisions.

The RAN Championship division features Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and the USA South Panthers. Missing are Guyana and Mexico who instead are involved in the Americas Rugby Challenge together with Colombia and Paraguay.

The bottom placed side from the RAN Championship will play in the 2019 RAN Cup division. This year’s competition saw Barbados and Jamaica playing home-and-away. Jamaica won both to confirm promotion.

The third division is known as the Trophy Division. This is the tier which St Vincent & the Grenadines and St Lucia may join over time. The 2018 Ran Trophy includes Curaçao, the Dominican Republic and Guadeloupe.

Not involved in the three tiered competitions this year are several RAN members. Yet initiatives have seen international competition such as today’s match between St Lucia and St Vincent & the Grenadines. An additional fixture earlier this month saw the Turks and Caicos Islands playing against the British Virgin Islands.
