Argentine back row Volpi joins Ospreys

Argentine back row Guido Volpi has joined Ospreys. The Welsh regional side announced the recruitment of the 22-year-old on Wednesday.

Volpi’s signature comes after he impressed the Swansea based region while on trial in April. In acquiring his services the Welsh region are to include him in their roster for the pre-season ahead of the 2018-2019 Guinness Pro 14 Championship.

For Volpi the move is a first opportunity playing in an elite level rugby competition. He was previously part of French Pro D2 club Narbonne where he captained their Espoirs development side.

In Argentina he played for CUQ Rugby in Greater Buenos Aires and was a product of the PladAR system. He remains uncapped by Argentina and also unattached. He qualifies for Italy via eligibility laws. Standing 1.93m tall and weighing 110kg, Volpi can also cover lock though he has been signed as a loose forward.

He is the only Argentine player presently contracted to a top flight Welsh side. Prior Argentina players to have played for Welsh teams in the Guinness Pro 14 include Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Tomás Vallejos Cinalli, Lucas González Amorosino, and Joaquín Tuculet.
