The Uruguay XV played host to Chile on Saturday. The fixture was the first of its kind as it broke with the tradition of capped internationals between the countries.
With Uruguay having qualified for RWC 2019 the focus for the remainder of 2019 is expanding the player base. The leading domestic based players are now professionals. The fifteen players to have signed with the URU are to be joined by European-Based players to provide Uruguay with the bulk of players to play in Japan 2019.
Identifying the remainder of the roster is the focal point of the Sudamericano 6 Naciones A. For many it is an opportunity and with injuries certain to impact selections the players have everything to play for.
Chile were not in Montevideo to provide the Uruguayans with match practice. To the contrary, Chile was looking to turn around a poor performance last weekend. That they did as they bounced back in style to return home with their eyes set on back-to-back wins as they host Paraguay next weekend.
Chile outscored the Uruguay XV by three tries to two. The tries saw three of Chile’s leading players all scoring with their fullback sealing the result with a conversion from near the touchline.
