Uruguay XV Beaten At Home By Chile

The Uruguay XV have been beaten at home by Chile. Los Cóndores conquered the Estadio Charrúa, winning a thriller 22-20. The win gives both Chile and Uruguay a 1-1 record in the 2018 Sudamericano 6 Naciones A.

While not being Los Teros the Uruguayans went into the match with four professional players contracted to the URU – Diego Magno, Juan Echeverría, Nicolás Freitas, and Joaquín Prada.

The Uruguay XV were also coming off a win over Colombia. Chile, meanwhile, had their backs to the wall after struggling in the opening round against Brazil in São Paulo.

The Uruguay XV opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. They did so after Cóndores fullback Tomás Ianiszewski had been off target with an early penalty attempt.

The opening score came in the form of a penalty try. It also saw Chile down to 14 men temporarily with hooker Rodrigo Moya being yellow carded.

No further points would come until the second half. A 44th minute drop goal from fullback Manuel Blengio gave the Uruguay XV a 10-0 lead.

Five minutes later Los Cóndores opened their account, doing so through the boot of Ianiszewski. It was the result of a period of Chile having the upper-hand and would be followed by a try to flanker Javier Richard who provided great support to center Francisco de la Fuente.

A second Chilean try followed. this time with de la Fuente charging over from close range. The score gave Chile a hint at completing an upset victory which was furthered via a successful conversion.

Uruguay hit back with their second try. Like the first it was a penalty try and no conversion would be required. Notwithstanding, winger Federico Favaro would score three points as he added a penalty. With it Uruguay held a 20-15 lead late in the match.

The winning team, though, would be Chile. Bayonne second-rower Pablo Huete powered over to level the scores giving Ianiszewski the opportunity to compete the win. His wide conversion handed Los Cóndores a 22-20 victory.
