Match Preview – Paraguay vs Colombia

Paraguay have home advantage today against Colombia. The match is a second round fixture in the Sudamericano 6 Naciones A competition. Both countries join the top tier of South America, an important change for both countries.

Despite being similarly positioned in the Americas Rankings there has not been a detailed history of international competition between Paraguay and Colombia. Paraguay first competed in the South American A Championship in 1971 while Colombia’s first appearance is now in the new format of the Sudamericano 6 Naciones A.

Previous restructuring saw Paraguay moving between the South American A and B divisions while Colombia joined the South American B Championship in 2001. Paraguay and Colombia would meet in the 2004 and 2005 tournaments with Los Yacarés winning 79-7 and 82-8.

Tremendous improvement from Los Tucanes saw reduced deficits in the 2012 and 2013 South American B Championships. Paraguay won the matches 54-17 and 25-15. In their most recent match Paraguay won 39-27 in a RWC 2019 qualifier in Asunción in 2016.
