Canadian age-grade international Sam Hayward has signed with Birmingham Moseley for the 2018-19 season. Born in Australia, the 23-year-old qualifies for Canada via his mother, a native of Alberta. Hayward represented Canada at the 2014 World Rugby u20 Trophy tournament in Hong Kong. He was also part of the Canada ‘A’ squad that toured to the UK in August 2016.
At 6’5″ (1.96m) and 220lbs (100kg) his physique resembles that of former Canadian international Mike Pyke. Also similar is Hayward’s versatility as he is capable of playing flyhalf, centre, or fullback. Having played for Sydney University at junior level, he spent two seasons with Parramatta in the Shute Shield and was most recently seen playing for Burnaby Lake in the CDI Premier league.
Traditionally referred to simply as Moseley, the club added Birmingham to its name officially prior to the 2016-17 season. They are currently in the semi-professional English third division, known as National One. Moseley has previously been a home to several Canadian internationals including Al Charron, Kevin Wirachowski, Tony Healy, Ollie Atkinson, and most recently Aaron Flagg.
