RFU Championship – Round 22 Preview

It’s the final weekend of the Greene King IPA Championship season and all six games will be played on Saturday. Bristol have already secured the title and with it promotion to the Premiership, while Rotherham have long since been resigned to relegation to National One.

Many of Bristol’s players have already played their last game for the club, like Argentine prop Gastón Cortes who is headed to another Premiership club next season. The soon-to-be-Bears will have former UBC flanker Sam Jeffries on the blindside once again for the away game at Hartpury.

Neither Kyle Baillie or Dino Waldren are named in the London Scottish team to face Yorkshire Carnegie. Waldren has returned to the USA to have surgery on a persistent shoulder injury and it’s not clear if either of the North Americans will return next season.

Nick Civetta is on the bench for Doncaster as they host Jersey at Castle Park. His destination for next season is unclear but with his contract up in June and Newcastle’s ‘A’ league commitments over, could he make a surprise appearance in Major League Rugby?

Two further Eagles will play opposite each other at Goldington Road. Will Hooley starts for Bedford at flyhalf and Ronnie McLean is in his usual midfield slot for visitors Richmond.

Shane O’Leary is set for his final appearance in an Ealing shirt as he starts against the Cornish Pirates before heading for Canada test duty and then Nottingham. The home side will have four Americas players in the run-on side. Fellow Canadian internationals Brett Beukeboom and Matt Evans are at lock and left wing respectively. Argentine duo Nicolás de Battista and Nicolás Coronel will partner in the midfield for the first – and only – time this season.
