Clever returns to Pitch with Austin Elite

This afternoon, Austin Elite Rugby announced that they have added Todd Clever to their roster for the upcoming Major League Rugby season. After amassing the most test caps (76) in USA history, Clever joined Austin as an ambassador in 2016. The most decorated and recognizable American rugby player isn’t prepared to let go just yet as he extends a professional career that began in 2009 with the Golden Lions in the Super 14. Clever has since played professionally in Japan and most recently in England for the Newcastle Falcons.

“I have really enjoyed the business side of rugby, and I thought my playing days were over, but I do have a rubber arm when it comes to playing” says Todd Clever in a release from Austin Elite Rugby. “To be part of Major League Rugby as a player, is really special”

“I look forward to having Todd on the team” quoted Alain Hyardet Head Coach “He comes with invaluable experience and will be a key contributor this season”

Austin Elite opens up their official Major League Rugby account this coming weekend against the Glendale Raptors. Clever is expected to be available for selection immediately.

“Todd Clever is the most recognized name and face in USA Rugby and Major League Rugby is excited to have a player of Todd’s caliber playing in the inaugural MLR season” commented Dean Howes MLR League Commissioner “With the most caps (76) in USA history, we look forward to seeing Todd, receive his first MLR cap.”

The addition of Clever should be a welcome boost for an Austin Elite side that were winless during the pre-season with a loss against the SD Legion and two lopsided losses at the hands of NOLA Gold. He joins a back row that includes up and comer Hanco Germishuys and Pedrie Wannenburg who was another veteran drawn out of retirement. The trio should make a formidable back row for Austin Elite.

Austin faces the daunting task of opening up their MLR season on the road against league favorites Glendale and then following that with a trip to face off against in-state rivals Houston Sabercats. A player with Clever’s experience and skill may help turn the tides and put Austin Elite in a position to challenge for the inaugural MLR title.
