Fernández Splits the Stade Français Defense

While Saturday’s performance against Paris will not be fondly remembered by Clermont there was a good early try scored by Patricio Fernández. The Argentine fly half split the Stade Français defense to score the only try of the match for Clermont.

Fernández’ try would help his side to a 13-13 half time scoreline. Yet in the second half, with no further points scored, Clermont would slump to a 50-13 hammering. It means that Clermont is now in 10th position in the Top 14.

The six best teams will contest the play-off’s and with La Rochelle and Lyon both on 61 points there is too much above Clermont for them to defend their title. The club’s mid-season injury crisis and juggling of the Top 14 and Champions Cup have proven to be too much for the club to handle.

A place in the Challenge Cup will await Clermont instead. For Patricio Fernández, though, the failings of his club need not be negative from a personal standpoint. His likely return to Los Pumas could now take place in June against Wales and Scotland.
