USA and Argentina fly into Hong Kong Quarter Finals

Two Americas teams will compete in the Cup Quarter Finals of the Hong Kong Sevens. A strong Day Two for the USA see them advance from the pool stages undefeated while Argentina will look to regroup from their loss to the Eagles after impressing against France.

A stutter-start against France on Day One did not impress coach Mike Friday but his charges responded with two dominant efforts on Day Two. Wales were left for dead with seven different Eagles touching down and then a Danny Barrett hat-trick was enough to brush the Pumas aside in the final pool match.

Argentina had no answer to the power of Barrett & Co. and will be disappointed in the result after starting the tournament so well. Two tries from Matías Osadczuk led the way against France in an almost identical performance to the opening game against Wales.

Canada’s inconsistent form continued as they flattered to deceive on Day Two. Harry Jones and Justin Douglas each scored twice as they produced an excellent performance against Australia but then flopped against Spain in a winner-take-all contest that saw the Leones advance to the Quarter Finals instead.

Vancouver champions Fiji look on course to earn back-to-back HSBC Sevens Series titles after breezing through their pool including a stunning 50-7 result over a below-strength New Zealand. South Africa also sent a second-string side but still managed to come through their pool with three wins from three.

It will now be Argentina’s task to try and halt Fiji in the Quarter Finals, with South Africa drawing Spain. The USA enter their match against New Zealand as favorites and if victorious will face the winner of Kenya vs Scotland. Canada will play South Korean in the Trophy Quarter Final.
