Chile advance to Qualifier Semi Finals

Chile’s hopes of achieving core status on the HSBC Sevens Series are still alive after they defeated Hong Kong 24-12 at the Qualifier event in Hong Kong. Two tries from Benjamín de Vidts led the way with singles coming from Rodrigo Fernández and Francisco Metuaze.

Earlier in the day the Cóndores secured their place in the finals with a dominant 29-5 win over Georgia. Fernández touched down twice with Ignacio Silva, de Vidts, and Lucas Westcott adding one each.

South America’s other Quarter Final hope Uruguay did not advance. After trailing 26-7 early in the second half the Teros mounted a comeback with tries from Eugenio Plottier and Diego Ardao but could not make up the difference before time expired.

Jamaica’s tournament ended with their final pool match against the Cook Islands. A late try from Josh Christie drew them level and Oshane Eddie’s conversion put them two points up, a gap that would hold through to the final whistle.

Chile now faces Germany in the Semi Final that takes place just after midnight Eastern time this evening. The other Semi Final will see Japan paired with Ireland, a team who have conceded only two tries in their four games thus far.

All qualifier matches are streamed live on the World Rugby Sevens Facebook page.
