Matt Evans extends Cornish Pirates stay

Canadian international Matt Evans has signed a one-year deal with the Cornish Pirates that will see him stay in Penzance for an 8th season. The 30-year-old has been a mainstay for the club since joining following the 2011 World Cup. Though he plays fullback for Canada, it’s been on the wing where he has appeared most often for the Pirates.

Evans recently returned from a serious knee injury that saw him sidelined for virtually the entirety of 2017. He suffered a setback in December that ruled him out of contention for Canada’s World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay but has now scored three tries in five matches played since February.

The Pirates are currently in 5th spot on the Championship table and with three games left could finish as high as third with Bedford only four points ahead. Canadian lock Brett Beukeboom is already contracted for a further year with the club. Argentine midfielder Nicolás de Battista has assumed the captaincy in only his second season with the team.
