Canada names women’s team for Commonwealth Games

Head coach John Tait has named his team to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. This is the first time women’s rugby has been included in the games, which follows on the success of the sport at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The team includes eight players who won Bronze in Rio. Those who were not in that team include Olivia Apps, Caroline Crossley, Julia Greenshields, Sara Kaljuvee, and Breanne Nicholas. Ottawa Irish forward Pam Buisa will travel with the squad to cover for injury.

World Rugby Player of the Year nominee Ghislaine Landry leads the team and will have to do so without chief lieutenant Jen Kish. The Olympic captain has been ruled out of the Games with injury.

The three-day Commonwealth Games rugby event begins on Friday, April 13. Following its conclusion the team will travel to Japan where they will take part in the Kitakyushu tournament beginning on April 21, the third of five stops on the 2017-18 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series.
