DTH van der Merwe made a dream return to the Guinness Pro 14 Championship on Friday. Having departed the Newcastle Falcons to rejoin the Glasgow Warriors he ran riot, crossing for a brace of tries in the opening half.
Aged 31, the record Canadian try scorer played for Glasgow for the first time since 2015. He had joined the Scottish side from Saracens in 2009 and would go on to win what is now the Guinness Pro 14 Championship with the club in 2015. In 2017 he won the same title with the Scarlets before joining Newcastle.
His return fixture was on Friday against Zebre. Playing at home the Glasgow Warriors won 68-7. He would score the game’s opening try, doing so untouched down the left flank. His second try would seal Glasgow’s bonus point. It saw him making a clean break from a set-piece move and again diving over untouched.
