Padraic O’Shaughnessy Trains in Fiji

The Greatest Rugby Sevens player of all-time, Waisale Serevi, enabled young Bermuda player Padraic O’Shaughnessy to have the opportunity to train in Fiji. He would also play in the Coral Coast Sevens.

The Coral Coast Sevens is Fiji’s most important Rugby Sevens tournament. It has unveiled many of the sport’s premier athletes. This year’s edition saw not only Serevi involved but also the Gold Medalist Fijian Coach Ben Ryan and former New Zealand captain DJ Forbes.

O’Shaughnessy who plays his rugby for Teachers Rugby club in Hamilton, Bermuda earned a call-up from the King’s Select u19’s to play in the 24-team Coral Coast Sevens tournament. He travelled to Fiji to train with the roster ahead of the tournament.

His involvement was immense, starting in all three pool matches, playing in the forwards. The team began with a 12-7 win over Dratuba and ended with a 29-5 victory over the Skyline Natabua Beez. In between hand the team competed to a 12-12 draw against the Rugby Academy Fiji.

The poll results saw King’s Select winning the group on points differential. They would face Rugby Academy Fiji 2 in the Quarter Finals. With the teams tied on full-time they entered extra time with King’s Select scoring to win.

Their Semi Final opposition would be the world famous Wesley College Fijians. The match itself was broadcast live on Fijian television. The King’s Select would compete hard but ultimately fell to a 24-15 defeat.
