Brazil is likely to have two Teams in South American Professional Rugby reports Victor Ramalho. Writing for Brazilian rugby specialist website Portal do Rugby, Ramalho notes the plans following a discussion with Agustín Danza, the CEO of the CBRu (Brazilian Rugby Confederation).

The discussion confirms that the South American Professional Rugby competition is being planned by the governing bodies of rugby in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The same four are those who play in the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC).

The four unions are working together and are also in unison with World Rugby. The global governing body of the sport is in support of the new competition.

The South American Professional Rugby competition will act to provide valuable game time for players involved in the ARC. It is a step towards enabling players to concentrate full time on rugby. It is designed to help improve the players and teams with all benefitting as a result.

Danza made it known that Brazil is likely to have two teams in South American Professional rugby. Where these teams will be playing and under what names remains unconfirmed. Yet it is extremely likely that Sao Paulo would get one team.

Also unconfirmed is when the competition itself would be played. Would it follow the ARC? Would it be a in the South American spring months? What is known is that the inaugural competition is planned to start between 2019 and 2020.
