12-Strong Mexico Ready for Hong Kong 7’s

A 12-strong roster is ready to represent Mexico at this year’s Hong Kong 7’s. The premier Rugby 7’s Series stop on the circuit will see the 43rd annual edition take place next month.

The men’s edition of the Hong Kong 7’s dates back to 1976 while the women’s category was first played in 1997. This year’s competition sees Mexico involved based on a tremendous qualifying campaign against familiar rivals.

Mexico won the 2017 Women’s Rugby Americas North Sevens, defeating Trinidad & Tobago 5-0 in the final. The tournament was a round-robin format with Bermuda, Dominican Republic, French Guyana, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago all involved.

In winning the competition Mexico qualified for the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens, the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (CACSO) Games and the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco.

In the 2017 competition the women’s teams representing the Americas were Argentina, Colombia, and Jamaica. Mexico’s qualification furthers the country’s increasing presence in the Rugby Americas North region.
