Magnificent Eagles triumph in Las Vegas

A magnificent performance by the US Eagles on Day Three of the Las Vegas Sevens saw them winning their first ever HSBC Sevens Series stop on home soil. It’s just the second ever HSBC circuit victory for the team, nearly three years removed from their first at London in May 2015. The Cup Final against Argentina was just the second-ever all-American Cup Final after last year’s Singapore event won by Canada.

Perry Baker’s mesmerizing double pushed the USA past Fiji in the Semi Final, while Argentina edged South Africa thanks to a last gasp try to Renzo Barbier. The USA proved a class apart in the final, however, scorching their way to a 28-0 victory thanks to a barnstorming two-try effort from Danny Barrett.

The undefeated tournament victory bumps the Eagles up to 6th spot on the overall 2017-18 HSBC Sevens Series table, one point ahead of England. Argentina remain in 5th spot, nine points up on the USA and five behind Australia.

Canada built on their two victories on Day Two with a 15-12 win over Scotland to earn a spot in the Trophy Final. Two tries from Tevaughn Campbell had them even with France but Jean-Pascal Barraque grabbed his second in the final minute to secure the victory for Les Bleus.

Uruguay’s tournament came to an end in the 13th place Semi Final against Samoa. Tries by Felipe Etcheverry and Diego Ardao were erased by four scores for the Samoans.

All four teams now head north to Vancouver for the 6th stop on the 2016-17 circuit.
