Argentina XV Call Up Santiago Álvarez to Face Uruguay

The Argentina XV have called up Santiago Álvarez to face Uruguay. The battle of Rio de la Plata will take place this coming Saturday in the resort town of Punta del Este.

Álvarez joins the Argentina XV after he was left out of Los Jaguares Super Rugby season opening tour of South Africa. He previously started for Los Jaguares against the Argentina XV in a warm-up in Buenos Aires.

In looking to knock-over Uruguay, Argentina XV head Coach Felipe Contepomi has again gone for changes. He made 13 alterations to the starting line-up for Chile this past weekend in Ushuaia. Further modifications are set to come in Punta del Este.

In addition to the inclusion of Álvarez from Los Jaguares another notable feature of the roster is the return of regular captain Lautaro Bavaro. In the absence of Bavaro the Argentina XV’ captaincy went to Tomás de la Vega in Ushuaia.

Despite both Bavaro and de la Vega named for the trip to Uruguay neither player is guaranteed of a start. Contepomi has the luxury of also having Rodrigo Bruni, Francisco Gorrisen, Santiago Montagner, and Santiago Portillo in his squad.

The Argentina XV are looking to rise up the standings in the Americas Rugby Championship. In round one the Argentina XV fell to the USA in Los Angeles. They rebounded to defeat Chile in round two. Uruguay, meanwhile, defeated Canada and Brazil. Los Teros are in second position behind the USA on points differential.
