Angus MacLellan set to join Utah Warriors

US Eagles prop Angus MacLellan will play for the Utah Warriors in the 2018 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old was surprisingly listed under the Utah banner when USA team for their Americas Rugby Championship match against Canada was announced, having been a long-time member of the Chicago Lions. A source within USA Rugby confirmed on Friday that MacLellan has signed to play for the Warriors in the inaugural season of the new domestic professional competition.

A tighthead by trade, MacLellan was a standout with the Ohio Aviators during the 2016 PRO Rugby season. He has been a regular in Eagles squads since making his test debut against Italy in June 2016, but to date has only two senior caps on his resume. The former Davenport University captain is set to win his third against Canada this weekend having been named as a reserve.

MacLellan should provide stability to a scrum that will include a few experiments. Rugby league international Pio Vatuvei and football convert Alex Tucci are set to be tested in the front row, with USA Islanders hooker Lote Tu’ipulotu also in the squad. The Warriors are still to officially unveil much of their roster though they have released several pictures from training and team functions on social media.
