Canada came away with Bronze on the second stop of the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series in Sydney on Sunday. It was a fine result that saw the team win five of six games with their only defeat coming at the hands of New Zealand in the Semi Final. The USA meanwhile struggled in the knockouts, dropping their three final matches to finish in 8th place overall.
Two tries from Britt Benn led the Canadians past France in the Cup Quarter Finals. They came up against a soaring New Zealand side in the semis, however, and struggled to get anything going offensively, ultimately shut out by 26-0. After recuperating ahead of the Bronze final they responded with a convincing performance, scoring six tries against Russia with Julia Greenshields grabbing a double.
It was Russia who had knocked out the Women’s Eagles in the Cup Quarter Finals. With a 17-0 lead the Russians looked to be coasting but nearly let it slip as the USA got tries from Alev Kelter and Cheta Emba, ultimately running out of time. The 5th place Semi Final again Spain was also a single-score defeat, the outstanding Patricia Garcia finishing up a hat-trick for the Leonas on full-time to wipe out Ryan Carlyle’s two for the USA. Ireland proved the more inspired side in the 7th place Final.
The two undefeated teams – Australia and New Zealand – met in the Cup Final but the result was a sensational performance from the hosts. Five different players touched down as they routed their antipodean rivals by a 31-0 score to take their second tournament victory of the 2017-18 circuit.
Australia have now collected the maximum 40 points through two events with New Zealand, Canada, and Russia in a three-way tie with 30 each. On points differential New Zealand are in second spot with Canada in third. The USA’s disappointing return drops them three spots to 5th overall on 24 points.
