Ben Cima signs for San Diego Legion

The San Diego Legion have largely kept it quiet compared to other Major League Rugby franchises when it comes to communications, but behind they scenes they have been busy. Ryan Matyas, Mike Te’o, Dylan Audsley, and Tadhg Leader are still to be revealed in an official capacity though they have confirmed their status elsewhere.

On Wednesday it was Ben Cima’s turn to reveal his chosen destination with the Eagles flyhalf revealing on social media that he will be joining the Legion for the 2018 season.

Possessing a siege-gun boot and a wide array of attacking skills, the 21-year-old Cima has been touted as a future international since his mid-teens. In 2017 he made the jump from the u20 program to test rugby and showed impressive composure in the Americas Rugby Championship.

Cima will compete with a pair of English-born players in Will Magie and Will Hooley for the No10 shirt in the 2018 ARC. The Argentine-born Baltimore resident departs his home club of Rocky Gorge to become the fourth current Eagles squad member in San Diego’s backline.

San Diego has featured short video clips of their recent player combine with a number of prominent local players visible. Former San Diego Breakers and USA Select XV loose forward Sione Tu’ihalamaka is among those expected to join the new franchise.

A number of New York-based Eagles have also been approached though their commitment is not assured with their own MLR franchise just a year away. Rugby Club New York will play a series of exhibition matches in 2018 before joining officially in 2019.
