Uruguay the Best from Americas On Day 1 of 2018 Viña Sevens

Uruguay was the best performer from the Americas on Day 1 of the 2018 Viña Sevens. Played in the Chilean city of Viña del Mar, Los Teros went undefeated with victories over Colombia, the USA and France.

In addition to Uruguay, the Americas are represented by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, and the USA. Invitational competitors include Germany, France, Ireland, and South Africa.

The 12 countries are divided into three pools of four. In Pool A Ireland finished Day 1 in top spot. The Western Europeans competed to a draw in their opening match before recovering to defeat South Africa and Paraguay in their remaining fixtures. The draw was against Brazil and Os Tupis would also draw against South Africa.

Both Argentina and Chile were in Group B. Los Pumas lost their opener against Germany 24-12. Their underwhelming day also included a 17-12 defeat against Chile. Los Cóndores had a highly successful day, defeating not only Argentina but also Canada. Germany, though, toppled the hosts. Canada was winless.

Los Teros sealed top spot in their pool. Their perfect day had three memorable wins. They now face Brazil in the Quarter Finals that will double as a knock-out for qualification to the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. If Brazil lose, Uruguay will have done enough. If the Tupis win, however, they have a chance to make up the five-point deficit heading into the tournament.

France finished second ahead of the USA and Colombia in the group. As the worst of the third placed sides the USA failed to reach the Quarter Finals.
