British & Irish Cup – Round 5 Preview

While the big names scrap it out in the European Cup competitions, the up-and-comers will get their say in the British & Irish Cup. As we get nearer the Americas Rugby Championship a few players have already been released but there are seven in action over the weekend.

Friday evening’s matches saw Bedford travel to Port Talbot to play the Ospreys Premiership Select side. Canadian flanker Justin Blanchet returned from a broken arm to start on the blindside flank. His physical play helped the Blues take a 15-12 win on the road. New US Eagles selection Will Hooley came off the bench early in the game and also made a strong impression.

Meanwhile in Belfast the Cornish Pirates were up against the Ulster Ravens at Shaw’s Bridge. Brett Beukeboom was back from a head knock and started in the second row for the Pirates in the 25-14 loss. He’ll join up with the Canadian squad during the week. Nicolás Coronel came off the bench.

Saturday’s matches will see two North American props as reserves for their respective teams. Djustice Sears-Duru covers loosehead for Ealing when they host Connacht Eagles, and Dino Waldren is replacement tighthead for London Scottish who host Yorkshire Carnegie at the Athletic Ground. Both will play a part in the upcoming internationals.

Lastly uncapped Argentine flanker Adam Lee is on bench duty for Richmond as they travel to Rotherham to face the Titans. The former Los Tilos player has forced himself into first team contention with some committed performances this season.
