Chile beat South Africa on perfect day at Punta 7s

Chile have claimed another famous victory as they defeated South Africa on Day One at the Sudamérica Sevens in Punta del Este. Los Cóndores earned an historic win over New Zealand at the Silicon Valley tournament in November, and while both teams were made up of development players they remain huge achievements for the South American side.

It was a perfect start for Chile as they emerged from the pool stages as the only unbeaten team in the competition. Germany, South Africa, and Paraguay were defeated in succession, earning the Condores the top ranking heading into the Quarter Finals.

Meeting them there will be Argentina, who were soundly beaten by Ireland in their opening match and just barely edged Colombia before finishing with a win over Canada. For the Canadians it ended a disappointing Day One that saw them fall to Colombia and Ireland in their first two matches.

The USA fared little better, losing to Uruguay and then suffering heavy defeats at the hands of France and Brazil. Los Teros had a decent showing with a win over France as well but were narrowly defeated by Brazil in their second match. The Tupis meanwhile lost to France in their opener, but will have a shot at redemption in the Quarter Final.

Day Two kicks off at 5pm local time (3pm ET) with a live broadcast available to South American viewers on ESPN3 and ESPN Play.
