Civetta shown red card against Carnegie

Just two weeks after Juan Imhoff was sent off against Castres the Americas have seen another red card brandished to an international player. US Eagles lock Nick Civetta was the culprit this time, receiving his marching orders at Castle Park on Friday evening after initiating a head-on-head contact situation with Yorkshire Carnegie scrumhalf Will Homer.

With Doncaster leading Carnegie by two points in the 39th minute, Civetta aggressively entered what appeared to be a ruck situation and in doing so cleaned out Homer head-first. After a lengthy discussion with the TMO, referee Trevor Fisher decided he had no option but send the American from the pitch.

The decision was not without controversy, with color commentator Dewi Morris and halftime pundit Pat Sanderson both suggesting the call was harsh. Whether the ruck was clearly over will be up for discussion at the judicial hearing but the clumsy action could well earn Civetta a couple weeks on the sidelines.
